The Do's and Don'ts of a Maternity Photoshoot: The Ultimate Guide for every pregnant woman

Welcome to the ultimate guide for expecting mothers who want to create magical memories through a maternity photoshoot. As you prepare to celebrate this precious moment in your journey to motherhood, we'll walk you through the do's and don'ts of a getting amazing pregnant photos at your maternity photoshoot. Follow these tips to ensure a smooth and memorable experience that results in stunning photographs you'll cherish forever.

The Do's

1. Plan Ahead

Start by planning your maternity photoshoot well in advance. Choose a date that aligns with your pregnancy timeline and allows your bump to be prominently displayed. Consider the season and location for the shoot to create the perfect backdrop for your photos.

2. Wear Comfortable Clothing

Opt for attire that makes you feel beautiful and comfortable. Flowing dresses, form-fitting outfits, solid colors and clothes with texture tend to photograph well. Don't be afraid to add accessories like hats or jewellery to enhance your look.

You can also choose a photographer like Renee that has a client wardrobe full of dresses and accessories for you to wear so you don't need to run around in search of the perfect outfit to purchase.

3. Embrace Natural Light

Natural light is your best friend when it comes to photography. Schedule your shoot during the golden hours of early morning or late afternoon to capture soft, flattering light that adds warmth to your photos.

4. Incorporate Personal Touches

Consider incorporating personal items such as sonogram images, baby shoes, or meaningful props to add a unique touch to your photos. These elements will make your pictures more meaningful and tell a beautiful story.

5. Work with a Professional Photographer

Hiring a professional photographer who specialises in maternity shoots (like me) can make a significant difference in the quality of your photos. A skilled photographer will know how to pose you, capture your best angles, and create stunning compositions.

The Don'ts

1. Avoid Busy Patterns and Logos

When selecting your wardrobe for the pregnancy photoshoot, steer clear of busy patterns, large logos, or distracting prints. These elements can take the focus away from you and your bump in the photos.

2. Don't Overlook Hair and Makeup

While natural beauty is encouraged, a little makeup can enhance your features and make you feel more confident in front of the camera. Avoid really heavy makeup but consider subtle enhancements like some light foundation or powder to even out skin tone and some other light makeup to highlight your best features.

3. Avoid Stress

Remember that the goal of the photoshoot is to capture the beauty and joy of pregnancy. Avoid stress and pressure, relax, and enjoy the process. A calm and positive mindset will reflect in your photos, creating authentic and heartwarming imagery.

4. Avoid applying tanning solutions to your skin in the 2 days prior to your session

Skin with a little colour looks great however it can sometimes lead to orange tones in your photographs. It's best to avoid tanning using creams and sprays in the days prior to your maternity photoshoot. If you wish to apply fake tan for your session try to plan to do this at least 2 days prior to your session to give your skin time to absorb the colour and look more natural.

5. Don't Rely Solely on Editing

While editing can enhance your photos, it's important to strive to capture the best possible images in-camera. Focus on lighting, composition, and posing during the photoshoot to reduce the need for extensive editing later on.

Whether you're going for a whimsical outdoor shoot or a cozy indoor session, these do's and don'ts will guide you towards a successful maternity photoshoot experience. Embrace your pregnancy glow, showcase your bump with pride, and let your personality shine through in every frame. Remember, these photos will be treasured mementos of an unforgettable time in your life.
